Employee Recognition Programs

Employee recognition is an important aspect of our work at SIU School of Medicine. There are several ways that we honor our employees for their outstanding contributions:

Harbinger of Goodwill

The Harbinger of Goodwill program was established to recognize SIU School of Medicine employees for going above and beyond the School's commitment to the Behavioral Standards. A nomination form can be completed by an employee or patient who wishes to recognize the efforts of an employee.  Nominations will be provided to the employee's supervisor along with a recognition lanyard that can be worn with your SIU School of Medicine ID Badge. His/Her nomination will also be mentioned in the SIU School of Medicine Examiner as well as on the Human Resources intranet site.

Civil Service Employee of the Month

Any Civil Service employee who has completed the initial six-month probationary period may be nominated for the Civil Service Employee of the Month, with the exception of Selection Committee members. The nomination forms will be kept under active consideration for six months. An employee can be nominated by anyone - employee, patient, visitor, medical staff.

The Civil Service Employee of the Month Selection Committee reviews the nominations once a month to select an employee for the award. The committee is composed of a diverse group of civil service employees.

Civil Service Employee of the Year

The Employee of the Year is selected annually by a special Selection Committee. Selected Employees of the Month from the previous calendar year are eligible for consideration for Employee of the Year.

Civil Service Supervisor of the Year

This award is designed to recognize the outstanding contributions of the School's Civil Service employees.  Employees receiving this honor are treated to lunch with the Dean, receive a SIU School of Medicine portfolio, receive a certificate recognizing their achievement, are invited to the annual recognition luncheon, have their photograph displayed in the Dean's Lobby and are eligible to be named Civil Service Employee of the Year!

Principal Administrative Employee of the Quarter

This award is designed to recognize the outstanding contributions of the School's Principal Administrative employees.  Any member of the university community may nominate a principal administrative employee for employee of the quarter. Selection is to be based on outstanding professional and personal qualities of the individual. They can include, but are not limited to any of the following:

  • quality and quantity of work
  • initiative, dependability and judgment
  • ability to develop cooperation within a unit or between units
  • service to the school's mission of service to the state
  • service as a representative of the school to local, state and/or national professional organizations and/or community groups

The nominations are reviewed quarterly by the PA Employee of the Quarter Selection Committee composed of a diverse group of PA employees. The PA Employee of the Quarter Program is managed by the PA Council and facilitated by the Office of Human Resources.

Service Awards

SIU School of Medicine realizes it is important to honor employees for their years of service.  Employees of SIU School of Medicine celebrating milestone anniversaries starting at 5 years and continuing in five year increments are honored in a special way each year.

The Employee Recognition luncheon held in April each year during the National Employee Appreciation Week honors employees celebrating five years and ten years of service as well as the previous year’s Civil Service Employees of the Month and Principal Administrative Employees of the Quarter.  This is also a special time to recognize the Civil Service Employee and Supervisor of the Year as well as the Group Quality Award winning team.  Five year recipients are honored at a lunch with Dean Kruse and are presented with a certificate and pin to mark the milestone. Ten year recipients will be presented with a certificate and an engraved crystal candy dish to celebrate their years of service.

Employees with 15 to 35 years of service will be invited to the Annual Service Awards Dinner held in October. The dinner is historically held at the Sangamo Club in Springfield and each employee is invited to bring a guest if they choose.  Employees are honored with a certificate and professional photograph with the Dean on the night of the event. Employees celebrating milestone anniversaries beginning with 15 years will be presented with a service award packet. These packets, distributed on a quarterly basis based on the employee’s anniversary date, are sent to the employee’s supervisor for recognition and distribution. Each packet contains everything needed to place an order. There are approximately 48 quality choices at each level and selections will be shipped directly to each honoree’s home. This program offers choice, recognizing that all employees have varied preferences in how they would like to commemorate their years of service.  Each packet has different options to choose from including jewelry, lifestyle, home and garden, crystal and traditional gifts.  SIU School of Medicine has selected OC Tanner, the leading company in the service award industry, for the administration of these awards. For more information about OC Tanner, please visit their website at www.octanner.com.
