Farmers and their families often grapple with various stressors, including financial pressures, unpredictable weather conditions and the isolation of rural living. These challenges can contribute to feelings of depression, anxiety and even suicidality. SIU Medicine’s Farm Family Resource Initiative will host a virtual event designed to address the pressing mental health concerns facing farmers and their families. Training and Using Standardized Patients for Teaching and Assessment

This workshop is designed to teach participants to recruit, train, and supervise the performance of standardized patients for both teaching and assessment. In addition to the strong focus on basic standardized patient training skills, case/checklist development and program maintenance will be covered. The workshop will be largely experiential with standardized patients being trained and cases written. The workshop will culminate on the final day with a dry run of the cases developed during the workshop.

Dr. Jerry Kruse discusses the region's health professionals shortage

The Citizens Club of Springfield’s January 26 public policy breakfast covered a subject close to home: the shortage of health care professionals and its current and future impact on Springfield. SIU School of Medicine Dean and Provost Dr. Jerry Kruse was the featured speaker and Dr. Stephen Stone , SIU Medicine professor emeritus, served as moderator. The discussion covered the types of medical positions most affected, factors contributing to the shortages, the impact on our region, and what was being done or can be done to address the issue.
