SIU Family Medicine offers Diabetes Wellness Workshop on Feb. 11

Published Date:

SIU Center for Family Medicine has been selected as one of only 10 organizations nationwide to participate in the American Diabetes Association’s Obesity Master Trainer program, a designation that will allow SIU to bring a complimentary community wellness workshop on healthy weight management to Springfield residents.

The wellness workshop will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Lincoln Library, 326 S. Seventh St., in the Carnegie North meeting room. The workshop is open to anyone 13 or older.

The ADA’s national Master Trainer program covers three health areas—obesity, eye health and immunizations—and offers specialized training for the selected organizations to take back to their communities. The Obesity Master Trainer program is an outreach initiative of the Obesity Association, a division of the ADA. It is designed to treat obesity as a chronic disease and focuses on reducing stigma, overcoming barriers to care and promoting evidence-based prevention and treatment strategies.

This additional training allows local Master Trainer Gayle Jennings, RDN, BC-ADM, CDCES, LDN, to expand her reach in the Springfield area. She will lead the wellness workshop at Lincoln Library and will focus on key factors in weight management, including eating habits, physical activity, self-care, weight stigma and medications. The session is designed for health care professionals, students in health care fields and the public.

To register, visit the event website or call 217.753.4900.
