SIU School of Medicine Honors Wei Du with the 2025 Frank J. Toth Research Award

Published Date:

SIU School of Medicine named Wei Du, researcher in the Research Core Facility, as the recipient of the 2025 Frank J. Toth Research Award. This honor recognizes non-faculty research personnel whose work significantly advances SIU School of Medicine's research mission. The award commemorates Frank J. Toth, a chemist whose commitment to health-related science inspired a legacy of research excellence.

Du has been a vital part of the SIU School of Medicine team since 2013, managing the imaging facilities at the Research Core Laboratory. Her expertise in microscopy, including confocal and electron microscopy, supports a broad range of biomedical research at SIU School of Medicine and the Simmons Cancer Institute. Her meticulous approach, exceptional organizational abilities and unwavering commitment to scientific progress have established her as an indispensable asset to the institution's research initiatives.

“Wei is instrumental in maintaining the quality and productivity of our research facilities,” said Dr. Donald Torry, associate dean for research and director of basic and translational research at the Simmons Cancer Institute. “Her technical expertise, combined with her dedication to training students and faculty, ensures that our imaging facilities continue to operate at the highest standards.”

Du's responsibilities extend beyond mere equipment upkeep. She actively collaborates with principal investigators; provides crucial assistance with data analysis; and offers practical, hands-on training to faculty, students and staff. Furthermore, her contributions to grant applications help to secure the acquisition of cutting-edge lab equipment, thereby amplifying the research capabilities for the entire institution.

The Frank J. Toth Research Award includes a monetary travel grant, which Du plans to use to attend a microscopy conference. Her continued growth reflects SIU School of Medicine’s commitment to discovery, collaboration and community-focused research excellence.

Wei Du’s recognition as this year’s Toth Award winner underscores SIU School of Medicine’s mission to advance health through innovative research and dedicated service. Her contributions exemplify the spirit of academic medicine: driving progress through expertise, collaboration and an unwavering commitment to scientific discovery.
