On March 15, SIU Medicine's graduating Class of 2024, along with fourth-year students at other medical schools across the U.S., received results from the National Resident Matching Program to learn their destinations for postgraduate training.

Dr. Poland has been an outspoken advocate for mandatory flu shots, inspiring the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendation for all persons over the age of six months to get one.

Dr. Wesley Robinson-McNeese, a trailblazing physician and leader at SIU School of Medicine, passed away on September 18, 2023. Dr. McNeese was the SIU System Executive Director for Diversity Initiatives and Special Advisor to the SIU Department of Antiracism, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

On October 28, SIU School of Medicine is hosting a 5K run/walk to honor Junaia Carter, MD, a 2010 alumnus who passed away from Stage 4 breast cancer shortly after graduation. The event in Springfield's Washington Park raises awareness and funds for breast cancer research.

In 2005, Steve and Diane Combs moved to Springfield and bought an older home in Enos Park near the SIU School of Medicine. The Italianate structure was built in 1881, and it needed some work.

For more than 10 years, SIU medical students have organized and volunteered for a spring cleaning day in the Enos Park and Pillsbury Mills neighborhoods.
