Family & Community Medicine - Carbondale Earns National Recognition

April 5, 2018 – The Southern Illinois University Family and Community Medicine program in Carbondale has achieved recognition as a Level 3 Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), a private, non-profit organization dedicated to improving health care quality. SIU Med Students Sponsor 5k to Benefit M.E.R.C.Y. Communities

Southern Illinois University School of Medicine students will sponsor the Annual Junaia P. Carter, MD 5k Run/Walk at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 14, at Washington Park in Springfield. Check-in will begin at 7:30 a.m. Originally known as the annual American Medical Association 5k, the event was renamed in honor of Dr. Junaia P. Carter, a member of the Class of 2010. Carter died in November 2010 after a battle with breast cancer. The SIU student chapter of the American Medical Association sponsors the 5k, which is now its 24 th year. “I can’t have cancer. That’s somebody else,” thought Richard Dennis when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Dennis, a retired Petersburg resident, had been active his entire life, walking two to three miles a day and working in his yard. “I’d never had a symptom, I hadn’t had health issues, and I didn’t take medication,” said Dennis. But a slowly elevating prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood level suggested otherwise. PSA is a protein produced by cells of the prostate gland.
