Amanda Fogleman, MEng

Primary Responsibilities:

My primary responsibilities include managing the administrative and operational duties for the Human and Community Development and the Health System Science divisions for the Department of Population Science and Policy. 

About:

While working on my undergraduate degree in Biology (specialization in Genetic Engineering), I worked weekends at Washington University in St. Louis where I helped to complete the Human Genome Project. Soon after graduation I began working at SIU School of Medicine. I started out working in discovery science laboratories doing research on Alzheimer’s, then genetic studies on lupus, and mycoplasma testing. In 2006, I took a leap into the clinical realm of science and worked for seven years working with cancer patients and survivors to determine the effects of exercise programs on their recovery or risk of recurrence. After a brief seven month detour to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, I returned to SIU School of Medicine in 2013. In 2014, I started a master’s program at University of Illinois at Chicago while continuing to work full-time. I obtained my Master of Engineering (MEng; specialization in Bioinformatics) in May, 2016.

I am one of the founding members of the Department of Population Science and Policy starting in 2013 when I returned to SIU School of Medicine to work with a small team on population health research. I have continued to grow with the department and enjoy my role in helping communities find sustainable solutions for issues they have identified and want to change.
