ALS drug shows varying effects against Alzheimer’s, metabolism

Effects are unique between males and females A recent study from the Hascup labs at SIU Medicine has shown how riluzole, a drug compound typically used to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), showed different effects on models with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) depending on whether they were male or female. Published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease , the study reports male mouse models with Alzheimer’s and healthy models showed improved glucose tolerance with riluzole treatment. However, female mouse models with Alzheimer's disease did not show significant improvements in metabolism

Alumni and Faculty Gather at the 121st AAO Annual Meeting

Members of the otolaryngology division gathered with alumni during a private reception at the 121 st AAO Annual Meeting, which was held in Chicago. The Annual Meeting and OTO Experience is for practicing otolaryngologists-head and neck surgeons and associates, research and senior academic professors and chairs. Dr. Bauer and members of the division took the opportunity to connect with numerous SIU surgery alumni.

1970s Steven Dodge, MD, ’75, is the physician assistant program director for Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. Grant Holland, MD, ‘75, is a cardiologist with Intermountain Medical Group in Ogden, Utah. Pat Zimmermann, MD, ’78, was named Family & Community Medicine Preceptor of the Year by St. Louis University. Kerry Florence, MD, ’78, retired from the practice of emergency medicine at St. Luke’s Hospital in Chesterfield, Missouri. Alzheimer's Caregivers Invited to Attend Free Training

Those who provide care to Alzheimer’s disease or dementia patients at home are invited to attend The Savvy Caregiver program, a free, six-week course. Beginning Oct. 2, classes will meet from 1 to 3 pm on Mondays, Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 and Nov. 6, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 533 S. Walnut St., Springfield.
