New partnership to combat food insecurities in children

According to the USDA, 10 percent of U.S. households and 12.5 percent of households with children have limited or uncertain access to nutritionally healthy food. Pediatric cardiologist Enas Shanshen, MD, has led efforts to establish a new partnership at SIU Medicine to help combat food insecurity in children. The Illinois Partnership for Childhood Nutrition Security brings together the holistic expertise of SIU Medicine with the guidance of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and its Illinois chapter (ICAAP). New procedure in Springfield provides options for high-risk patients

A breakthrough in cardiac care has arrived in central Illinois. SIU Medicine cardiologist Ahmad Al Turk, MD , assisted by Abdul Moiz Hafiz, MD and Abhishek Kulkarni, MD , recently performed the first BASILICA procedure at Springfield Memorial Hospital, bringing new hope to patients with complex heart conditions. BASILICA is an innovative technique designed to make transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) safer. TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure used to replace a failing heart valve, but for some patients, it carries a serious risk of coronary artery blockage. BASILICA helps prevent

New procedure offers less invasive lung biopsy

Patients in central and southern Illinois now have access to a more precise, safer way to detect lung cancer, thanks to a new robotic-assisted technology available through a partnership between SIU Medicine and Springfield Memorial Hospital. Pulmonologists Taylor Stone, MD and Mingchen Song, MD , performed the first biopsies using the platform last month. The Ion navigational bronchoscopy system reaches deep into the lung, to biopsy nodules that were previously difficult to access. New program puts community health workers at ground level

Establishing roots Community health worker Kaye Barnes sports a purple SIU Medicine T-shirt to complement her green thumb as she works in Springfield’s community gardens. A native of the city’s north side, she feels at home both tilling the soil or working in the trenches for her clients in the school of medicine’s Office of Community Care (OCC).
