SIU Alton Family Residency Program Granted Initial Accreditation by the ACGME

In light of our recent accreditation, we put together a short newsletter. Click here for a PDF version of the text below. After months of planning, and much hard work on the part of many people, we applied for and have received accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). We were notified of our official approval on May 4, 2020. The program will now begin recruiting resident physicians who spend the next three years as part of the Alton Family Medicine Residency and the Alton community. On October 28, SIU School of Medicine is hosting a 5K run/walk to honor Junaia Carter, MD, a 2010 alumnus who passed away from Stage 4 breast cancer shortly after graduation. The event in Springfield's Washington Park raises awareness and funds for breast cancer research.

SIU attends SNMA Conference

SIU Family Medicine Residency Program for Springfield went to recruit medical students at this year’s Student National Medical Associations Annual Medical Education Conference (SNMA). On April 5 - 9, Dr. Christopher Smyre, MD, Assistant Professor and Director of Antiracism, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, traveled to Hartford, Connecticut, with Dr. Dorathy Okon, MD, a PGY2 Family Medicine resident physician to recruit students to the program.
