SIU Med School to Host 14th Annual Cancer Symposium

“The Spectrum of Cancer Care for Primary Providers,” is the topic of the 14th Annual Simmons Cancer Institute Symposium, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, September 3 at Memorial Center for Learning and Innovation, 228 W. Miller Street, Springfield. SIU Med School to Launch Neuroscience Institute

Coordination to improve quality, lower costs Patients with complex brain and spine disorders may benefit from a new, multispecialty clinic at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield. The Neuroscience Institute (NSI) will consolidate SIU’s departments of neurology, neurosurgery and psychiatry into a single-site outpatient clinical care center staffed by more than 50 neuroscience providers. SIU Med School, Wash U Partner to Explore Rural Cancer Health Disparities

NIH grant to fund researcher development, increase cancer research scope Research suggests that where you live in Illinois impacts your likelihood of dying from certain diseases, specifically cancer. Low-income, rural communities experience significant cancer health disparities, including lower screening rates, increased incidence, later stage at detection, poorer survival rates and higher mortality. SIU Med School Welcomes Class of 2020

Seventy-seven medical students began their medical training last week at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Carbondale. The students participated in a "White Coat Ceremony" on Friday, August 12, in Shryock Auditorium. During the ceremony, Debra Klamen, MD, MHPE, associate dean for education and curriculum and chair of the Department of Medical Education, welcomed the students and read the Hippocratic Oath. SIU Med Students Meet Their Match

Senior medical students in the graduating Class of 2017 at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine received results from the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) on Friday, March 17, at the same time other U.S. medical students learned their matches to postgraduate training programs. Sixty-two SIU seniors have secured residency positions. Eleven students (18%) will begin residency training in internal medicine. Ten students (16%) will enter pediatrics, nine (15%) will enter family medicine, seven (11%) will enter emergency medicine and five (8%) will specialize in psychiatry

SIU Med Students Receive Scholarships

Auburn native Rachel Schmalsof received the J.S. Templeton, MD, Memorial Scholarship. Schmalsof is the daughter of Karen Schmidt of Auburn and the late Brent Schmalshof. She is a 2011 graduate of Auburn High School and a 2015 graduate of Elmhurst College. The Templeton Scholarship was established in 1993 by Harriss Malan of Carbondale and Jane Templeton Minton of DuQuoin, in memory of their uncle and father, Dr. James Scott Templeton. SIU Med Students, Residency Programs Meet Their Match

Senior medical students in the graduating Class of 2019 at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine received results from the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) on Friday, March 15, at the same time other U.S. medical students learned their matches to postgraduate training programs. Sixty-three SIU seniors have secured residency positions. View the list of students, hometowns, residency locations and specialties. Pictures of individual students are available upon request.
