Endometriosis is a disease in which cells that normally grow inside the uterus grow outside the uterus on the surface of abdominal organs, and can cause pain and infertility. The disease affects 1 in 10 women and causes fertility problems in nearly half of women with the disease. Andrea Braundmeier-Fleming, PhD, knows the disease well. SIU Medicine scientist to explore aging’s effect on balance

Balance problems that often accompany aging can lead to falls and injury. Research has also shown a strong link between balance disorders such as unsteady gait or vertigo and Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. An SIU Medicine research scientist has been awarded a $3.2 million grant from the National Institute on Aging to study how cumulative damage to specific hair cells in the inner ear can lead to these troubling balance problems. Dr. Sandra Ettema is currently recruiting for a clinical research study entitled, “A Pilot Study to Evaluate the Feasibility and Potential Effectiveness of the Flexitouch® System Head and Neck Treatment” at SIU School of Medicine. This 8-16 week study is looking at how your standard home care regimen compares to the FDA-approved Flexitouch® head and neck treatment plus standard home care in treating head and neck lymphedema. People with memory problems and their caregivers are invited to register for Opening Minds through Art (OMA), a 10-week class that improves patients’ physical and psychological well-being through creative expression.
