McDowell Named First Recipient of New Endowed Chair for Emergency Medicine Named after Dr. David Griffen

Dr. Christopher McDowell, an emergency medicine physician with SIU Medicine and the medical director of the Memorial Center for Learning and Innovation, will be the first recipient of a newly created endowment for emergency medicine. Memorial Medical Center is contributing $1 million to launch the David L. Griffen, MD, PhD, Endowed Chair of Emergency Medicine. Measuring MEDPREP's Effectiveness

By Steve Sandstrom After nearly 50 years of operation, how successful is the MEDPREP program in its mission to prepare students for medical professions? In 2016, Anneke Metz, PhD, interim director of MEDPREP, undertook a study of MEDPREP alumni to measure the program’s effectiveness. Her comprehensive survey tracked the post-graduate careers of 525 disadvantaged or underrepresented MEDPREP students over 15 years. Med School Celebrates Arts Magazine's 25th Anniversary

Since its founding in 1970, SIU School of Medicine has included instruction in the medical humanities to balance the focus placed on the applied sciences. In 1992 a pair of students -- Manish Kohli and James Davis -- initiated the creation of Scope, an annual literary arts magazine to serve as a creative outlet for SIU’s medical community. Poems, short stories, artwork and photography are submitted by SIU students, physicians, alumni, staff and family members each winter. Med Student Scholarships Distribution Doubles

In an outstanding show of support from donors, 45 medical students received a scholarship this academic year, more than double last year’s number. “A big thank you to all our donors who made these gifts possible,” said Necole Powell, director of development. “Our students graduate more than $200,000 in debt.
