State Medical Challenge Bowl

The SIU Physician Assistant Program's Challenge Bowl team won its third consecutive Illinois Academy of Physician Assistants State Medical Challenge Bowl! The Challenge Bowl was held at Northwestern University-Chicago on April 22, 2017. The team competed against PA programs from Rush University, Northwestern University, Midwestern University and Rosalind Franklin.

Statement in Response to Rational Vaccines' Clinical Trial: August 2018

SIU School of Medicine did not conduct the herpes vaccine clinical trial. Rational Vaccines conducted the trial, which was brought to SIU’s attention in October 2016 after it had concluded. Dr. Halford did not perform institutionally-designated activities to warrant him bringing Rational Vaccines’ clinical trial to the SIU IRB [accurate?]. SIU School of Medicine no longer participates in any research focusing on the herpes virus or the vaccine. Strong EM showing at SIU GME Resident and Fellow Quality Improvement Poster Competition

SIU Emergency Medicine residents presented quality projects at the Graduate Medical Education Resident and Fellow Quality Improvement Poster Competition and Symposium. Dr. Shreya Lankala, PGY-3, took first place for "Cost of Quality Waste from Inappropriate Urine Culture Testing in the Emergency Department." Dr. Alexis Koda, PGY-3, presented "Optimizing MRI Utilization in the Emergency Department" and Dr. Mark Baker, PGY-2, presented "Appropriate CT Cervical Spine Utilization in the Emergency Department."

Student groups bond over adversities, diversity

In the days following the killings of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd and Breonna Taylor in spring 2020, protests erupted across the United States. Though a pandemic made gatherings more difficult, citizens of all races and ages poured onto the streets to protest injustice and police brutality. Within the School of Medicine, Dean and Provost Jerry Kruse, MD, and Wendi El-Amin, MD, associate dean for equity, diversity and inclusion, wrote open letters expressing sorrow and outrage. Students Begin Training at SIU School of Medicine

Medical students in the Class of 2020 at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine began their medical training this week at SIU in Carbondale. The students will participate in a “White Coat Ceremony” at 3 p.m. Friday, August 12, in Shryock Auditorium. During the ceremony, Debra Klamen, MD, MHPE, associate dean for education and curriculum and chair of the Department of Medical Education, will welcome the students and read the Hippocratic Oath. Students Receive New Infection Prevention Award

Congratulations to Dr. Rory Mills (bottom), Class of 2019, and Shelby Markel (top), MS3, student recipients of the Infection Prevention Award presented by Dr. Subbash Chaudhary, chief of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at SIU Medicine. Dr. Chaudhary and his family endowed the new annual award to recognize role modeling and leadership for pediatric infection control. The award is given to two students and a resident each year. The winners received a plaque and $500 toward medical education activities or materials. The resident's award winner will be announed at the pediatric

Students spruce up medical district neighborhoods

SIU medical students got out of the classrooms and clinics and into the community for the annual Student Day of Service on April 14. Nearly 100 young learners tackled projects in the Springfield neighborhoods around the Mid-Illinois Medical District. Activities included alley clean-up, maintenance and landscaping at Enos Park, Pillsbury Mills, McClernand Elementary School, and the community gardens.
