The Founding Figures Collection of Medical Education

The Medical Library has compiled the collective scholarly works of four SIU-SOM “founding figures:” Dean and Provost Richard Moy, Dr. Howard Barrows, Dr. Roland Folse, and Dr. Reed Williams. These documents serve as the inaugural collections in our new archival platform, ArchivesSpace. One physical copy of each work has been placed in the School of Medicine Archives to be preserved in perpetuity. This ensures that the works of these scholars will be available for researchers for years to come. Highlights of the collection include: Dean Moy’s speech on the History of SIU-SOM Reed Williams’s

The Imagineering Lab

In 2016, orthopedic surgery resident David Tapscott, MD, approached library instructor Karli White with an unusual request. He asked if the library’s 3D printer could adequately render a model of a child’s spinal column. The physician wanted to use it to help explain a potential surgical procedure to the child’s family. Unfortunately, the library’s small 3D printer was a loaner and could not print the life-sized model. The pair looked elsewhere and were able to find an alternative printer at the Springfield Community Makerspace. White discussed the request with Library Director Taran Ley, who

The royal treatment: Understanding preventative chemotherapy

For many of us, the term preventative chemotherapy is confusing. Chemotherapy is a treatment for a disease, not medication to prevent cancer, right? And if surgery removed all traces of the cancer, why would a patient need to go through chemo?

The season is thick with ticks

As the tick population steadily rises, so does the opportunity to become bitten by one of these creepy crawlers. It's important to take precautions to avoid the diseases a tick can carry while outdoors enjoying nature more frequently during warm weather months. Lyme disease is especially one to be aware of and is the most prevalent vector-borne illness in the United States. The American dog tick, or hard tick, is the most common type of tick in central Illinois. A bite from this little arachnid (that’s right, ticks fall into the same category as spiders!) can lead to Rocky Mountain spotted
