Skin Cancer Screenings Available for Springfield Area Residents

Skin cancer screenings in Jacksonville on Aug. 24

Jacksonville Memorial Hospital and Simmons Cancer Institute will offer a free community skin cancer screening event from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 24, at Jacksonville Memorial Hospital, 1600 W. Walnut St. Screenings will be conducted by a dermatology team from Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU School of Medicine. Participants should not currently be under the care of a dermatologist. “Prevention, awareness and education are important parts of the care we offer,” said Aziz Khan, MD, executive director of Simmons Cancer Institute and chief of hematology oncology for SIU Medicine.

Smith Alzheimer's Center program Art Express receives donation

Helping those with memory loss and their caregivers showcase their artistic creativity will continue to thrive thanks to a recent donation. Art Express received a $2,000 donation from the Fat Ass 5K , an event that raises funds for a wide variety of charitable causes in the Springfield, Illinois area. Art Express is one of the Beyond the Medical Center programs hosted by the Dale and Deborah Smith Center for Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment, helping those with Alzheimer’s and related dementia through the therapeutic effects of art expression. As the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) appears to be on the rise, researchers like Diana Sarko, PhD, are dedicating their time to finding better therapies. She’s looking at how children with autism can use interactive robots, or social robots, to improve their communication skills and decrease anxiety. Southern Illinois teams to participate in child abuse simulation training

The challenges of preventing and responding to cases of child abuse can be difficult, even to professionals familiar in their roles within social welfare agencies. To aid in improving care, child protection teams from two Children’s Advocacy Centers (CAC) in Franklin and Williamson counties and the seven southernmost counties in Illinois (Two Rivers CAC) will receive simulation training on February 21-22 in Carbondale.
