About me
Dr. Sowmy Thuppal is Vice-Chair and Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Population Science and Policy at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, where he also serves as Director of Graduate Education Programs. He holds joint appointments in the Departments of Medical Education and Surgery. Dr. Thuppal has over 20 years of experience in epidemiology, public health research, clinical and translational research across both resource-limited and resource-sufficient settings.
His career spans investigator-initiated studies, industry-sponsored clinical trials, and community- as well as hospital-based research projects. His research interests include population and public health, patient-centered outcomes research, comparative effectiveness studies, health economics, and study design and methodology, and Artificial Intelligence in Medical Education.
In addition to his research, Dr. Thuppal is deeply involved in medical education, teaching both graduate and post-graduate courses in epidemiology and biostatistics. He also serves as the course director for the Master of Science in Population Science and multiple medical student electives. He has been recognized with awards for excellence in teaching and mentorship, including the Surgery Resident Teaching Faculty Award and the Academy Scholar Award for Scholarship in Education.
Dr. Thuppal also contributes to the scientific community as an Associate Editor for Trials and a reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals. He has published extensively on topics ranging from global health and nutrition to surgical outcomes and quality of life studies.
