Trauma Surgery & Surgical Critical Care Course

Description:

The student will spend time with the trauma / surgical critical care team, consisting of the attending, residents, and all other personnel, on daily rounds. The student will attend all events and activities that are required of an intern: taking call as scheduled, performing procedures under the guidance of a senior resident, managing patients of his/her own, which includes but is not limited to managing medications, ventilation settings, surgical procedures, etc. The student will write daily notes and be the primary care provider for his/her patients under the supervisions of the senior resident.

Objectives:

1. To better understand and learn the initial assessment, stabilization, and management of an acute trauma / surgical critical care patient.
2. To better understand and learn the management of a trauma / surgical critical care patient in the intensive care setting.
3. To better understand and learn surgical procedures (i.e. central line placement, chest tube placement, suturing skills, etc.).

Evaluation:

1 The attending physician and senior resident will base evaluation on performance during acute trauma settings, during discussions on morning rounds and from the written assessment of patients provided in the daily progress notes.
2. The student will also maintain a patient log, which contains dates worked, the patient problems seen and procedures observed, as well as performed.

Prerequisites:

*Successful completion of all third-year clerkships
