Here you will find a description of research projects currently ongoing at the Play Lab, as well as projects that were previously completed. For presentations and publications from these studies, see Publications .​ Ongoing: ​ Genetic Influences on Early Cognitive Development: Early cognitive development, such as ability to conserve, engage in fantasy, and group similar objects, is studied in 1- to 4-year-old twins. Twins are tested within a month of their birthdays in the play lab. This is a longitudinal study, with twins being tested every year from age 1 (or as early as we can recruit them)

Family Medicine Laboratory in Quincy Receives Accreditation and Excellence Award

The SIU Center for Family Medicine – Quincy has met all criteria for Laboratory Accreditation by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation Review (COLA), a national health care accreditation organization. The lab received no deficiencies and received the Laboratory Excellence Award, which represents the lab’s “commitment to performing quality patient testing and overall laboratory practices.” The lab “demonstrated successful proficiency testing for the prior three testing events and had no substantiated complaints against the laboratory,” according to the congratulatory letter from COLA. A pair of patients at the SIU Endocrinology Clinic celebrated major milestones in November. Springfield resident Matthew Derber, 31, has been living with Type 1 diabetes for 25 years. Julia Lopez, 38, of Chatham, has been monitoring and self-medicating for 28 years. Matt was diagnosed at age 6 and Julia at age 10. Type 1 diabetes can occur at any age but is most commonly diagnosed from infancy to the late 30s. Children with the illness face a lifelong struggle to maintain their health against chemical imbalances within their own bodies. In a person with type 1 diabetes, the pancreas produces
