SIU Medicine community displays artistic side

27 th annual edition of Scope published Southern Illinois University School of Medicine unveiled the 2020 edition of SCOPE, a literary magazine produced each spring by SIU medical students. The new volume contains more than 40 poems, short stories and pieces of artwork submitted by students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the school. First published in 1994, Scope showcases the artistic and creative energy of the SIU Medicine community. Prizes were awarded to the top three entries in the categories of poetry, prose and visual art. The winners, selected by the editorial staff, received

Glen Aylward, First Place: “Parkinson’s” Sixty thousand individuals are diagnosed with Parkinson’s yearly. There are a million people with Parkinson’s in the U.S. and Illinois is second in prevalence. I am one of these people. The painting "Parkinson's" (left) was done 6 years after my diagnosis and reflects the anatomic and emotional aspects of the disease. The brain, neurons and circuitry are indicated and the colors reflect inflammation, emotions and frustration. Hotline for IDOC

The Correctional Medicine IDOC COVID-19 Help Line will be operational 24-hours a day during the pandemic The Office of Correctional Medicine, in partnership with the Department of Internal Medicine, recently established a dedicated COVID-19 hotline for the Illinois Department of Corrections to assist with managing the health and well-being of its workforce during this difficult time. SIU Medicine’s expertise and efforts will take a large burden off of IDOC management while adding consistency to COVID-19 monitoring processes throughout our communities. Corrections, SIU Medicine partnering to improve health care delivery in state facilities

Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) are partnering to provide health care for individuals at state correctional facilities. “We are eager to offer a new approach to care for our corrections population,” said Rob Jeffreys, acting director of Corrections. “SIU School of Medicine has a reputation for quality medical care and innovation.
