Thank you for your interest in the Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship program at SIU School of Medicine. Our program is dedicated to cultivating the next generation of leaders in the field. With a diverse and committed faculty, our fellows gain a rich clinical, research and procedural experience in pulmonary and critical care medicine, spanning a broad spectrum of respiratory diseases and critical care challenges.

Program goals

  • Our mission is to train highly skilled pulmonary and critical care physicians through immersive clinical and research experience.
  • Upon program completion, fellows will be confident, capable clinicians ready to deliver exceptional, independent care in diverse settings.
  • We aim to develop physician leaders with deep expertise in all areas of pulmonary and critical care medicine, marked by sound clinical judgment, extensive medical knowledge and procedural proficiency.

Points of Pride

  • Collaborative clinics including:
    • Interstitial lunch disease (ILD) clinic with the Division of Rheumatology
    • Nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung disease clinic with  the Division of Infectious Diseases
    • ALS clinic with the Department of Neurology
    • Cystic fibrosis with the Department of Otolaryngology

Application information

We are a three-year, ACGME-accredited program for a maximum of six fellows and accept two fellows each academic year.

  • Our program accepts applications ONLY through ERAS.
  • We accept J-1 and H-1 visas.
  • Interviews will be held virtually on September 22, 23 and 30 and October 2.
  • Interview times are first come, first served.
  • We participate in the national fellowship match. The rank order list deadline is November 19, 2025. Match Day is December 4, 2025.
  • Signaling is considered and appreciated, but we review all applications and our selection is based on multiple criteria.

  • Medical school transcripts
  • A minimum of two letters of recommendation from physicians in your current program and one from your internal medicine program director.
  • Scores from ECFMG/USLME Steps 1 and 2.
  • ECFMG certificate, if applicable.
  • Curriculum vitae

Eligibility requirements

  • All applicants must be registered with the National Resident Match Program (NRMP) at www.nrmp.org.
  • Residency completed in an accredited training program in Internal Medicine in the United States or Canada.
