Point-of-Care Ultrasound: An Introduction and Refresher Course for the Practicing Physician

The availability of point-of-care ultrasound has grown across all areas of medicine. Its use has been shown to improve efficiency and quality of care when integrated into daily practice. SIU School of Medicine is offering a full day workshop aimed to provide practicing physicians and healthcare providers instruction on bedside ultrasound and how to integrate it into their practice. This includes didactics on sonographic principles and instrumentation, exposure to common applications of bedside ultrasound in the ED and hospital, and an introduction to ultrasound guided procedures. SIU Physician Assistant classes honored in White Coat ceremony

A White Coat ceremony held on Saturday, July 31, celebrated the 37 men and women who had just completed the Physician Assistant Program at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Carbondale. A gathering of family and friends at the SIU Student Center watched as members of the Class of 2021 received long white coats in recognition of their new degrees. The graduates then presented short white coats to the incoming members of the Class of 2023. The new Physician Assistant students started the 26-month-long program in late May. Graduating classes ‘77, '82, '87, '92, '97, '02, '07, & '12 will be celebrating June 24-25, 2022 in Springfield! A casual and fun Friday night family-friendly reception is planned as well as Saturday events that include a campus tour and class picnics. Skin cancer and sun safety

A 2014 U.S. Surgeon General’s call to action to prevent skin cancer prompted the Indoor Tan-Free Skin Smart Campus Initiative, which drew a strong associations between indoor tanning use and skin cancer. As a Skin Smart Campus, SIU School of Medicine supports public health efforts to inform the general public of skin cancer prevention strategies and to improve community access to sun protection materials.
