Medical students and residents have determined the recipients of the 2021 Department of Surgery Teaching Awards. Nick Tadros, MD, MCR, was named the "Outstanding Educator of the Year." Emily Serafin, MD, was the recipient of the "Community Faculty Teacher of the Year" award. Samuel Grampsas, MD, and Melanie Barnard, MD, received the "Faculty Teacher of the Year for Resident Teaching" awards. Norman Otsuka, MD, and Gordon Allan, MD, received the "Faculty Teacher of the Year for Medical Student Teaching" awards. Philipos Gebremedhin, MD, received the "Resident Teacher of the Year" award.

The SIU Family Medicine Residency Program, Carbondale offers its residents an unopposed (6-6-6), Osteopathically Recognized residency staffed by full-time medical faculty at the SIU Center for Family Medicine Clinic. Our graduates obtain exposure and are well trained to practice primary care in a multitude of settings: critical care, obstetrical care, newborn care, assisting in general surgery, and managing in a humane and competent manner a range of family medicine pathology. Opportunities for medical students with the SIU Family Medicine Residency Program Alton Did you know that the word “doctor” is derived from the Latin, docco, which means “to teach?” Physicians certainly are teachers, in many ways, from the interactions they have with their patients and communities, to the interactions they have with each other and also those experiences with other medical learners.
