Change in Library Hours

As with academic libraries throughout the country, the SIU Medical Library staff will begin working remotely on Friday, March 20 th , until further notice. Students, faculty, residents and staff with 24/7 access will continue to have use of the public library space , including bathrooms, study rooms, coffee maker and refrigerator. Public patrons will not be permitted access to the Medical Library until further notice. We will continue offering virtual services and resources for students, faculty, and staff via reference@siumed.edu (M-F from 8am-5pm) and through e-mail links on our website at

Brain Awareness Day 2020

Graduate students and research staff from the Department of Pharmacology organized Brain Awareness Day at Franklin Middle School on Friday March 6, 2020. During Brain Awareness Day, students and staff delivered a neuroscience presentation to educate Franklin 8 th grade students on basic brain anatomy and physiology. The Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives supports this outreach event by providing interactive hand-outs, booklets and pencils. Clinical Study Seeks Participants with Lung Disease

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a type of lung disease that results in scarring (fibrosis) of the lungs for an unknown reason. Over time, the scarring gets worse and it becomes harder to take deep breaths. The lungs become unable to take in enough oxygen. Dr. Rajagopal Sreedhar is recruiting participants for a clinical trial to see if pulmonary rehabilitation treatments improve the quality of life for patients with IPF. The study will compare standard of care treatment to exercise and education. The goal is test how well the combination of exercise and medication benefits the patient

Springfield teens complete SIU physician prep program

Fourteen Springfield-area high school students are better prepared to become physicians after graduating from the Physician Pipeline Preparatory Program (P 4 ), a four-year program sponsored by Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, Springfield Public Schools and the Sangamon County Medical Society. The P 4 graduation was held in the South Auditorium at SIU’s main instructional building, 801 N. Rutledge St. on February 13. USMLE program plans change in Step 1 score reporting

Excerpted from the United State Medical Licensing Examination The USMLE program will change score reporting for Step 1 from a three-digit numeric score to reporting only a pass/fail outcome. A numeric score will continue to be reported for Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) and Step 3. Step 2 Clinical Skills (CS) will continue to be reported as Pass/Fail. This policy will take effect no earlier than January 1, 2022, with further details to follow later this year. Learn more about this change on the USMLE website.
