29th Annual Trainee Research Symposium

Department of Medicine Faculty, Fellows and Residents: Congratulations to our residents and fellows who represented the Department of Medicine extremely well today, April 23rd, 2019, at the SIU SOM Trainee Research Symposium. Of the 63 oral and poster presentations, 22 were from the Department of Medicine. Our trainees did a remarkable job of presenting clinical vignettes and hypothesis-driven research in the form of oral presentations and posters. EM Residents Present at the 29th Annual Trainee Research Symposium

SIU Emergency Medicine residents had scholarly projects accepted at the 29th Annual Southern Illinois University Trainee Research Symposium. Dr. Rebecca Tracy (PGY-1) presented Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome in Post Streptococcal Glomerulonephritis: A Pediatric Case Report during a poster session. Dr. James Hart (PGY-1) shared a poster titled Incomplete Kawasaki Disease: Using Clinical and Diagnostic Evidence to Make the Diagnosis. Dr. Michael Kim (PGY-3) was chosen for an oral presentation discussing Euglycemic Diabetic Ketoacidosis, a Rare Complication of SGLT-2 Inhibitor Use

The Medical Library recently purchased several books for a new Graphic Medicine collection. A growing trend in medical literature, “Graphic Medicine” refers to “the intersection between the medium of comics and the discourse of healthcare.“ The collection contains graphic narratives that explore illness and other health topics from both the practitioner and patient perspective. Brain Awareness Day at Franklin MS

Faculty and students from the Department of Pharmacology presented Brain Awareness Day at Franklin Middle School on March 12. The Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives and SIU HEAL Scholarship supported this year’s outreach project that engages 7th and 8th graders through hands-on activities, games, presentations and a dissection.
