Police Brutality and Public Health

Police brutality illuminates a dark history in our society. There is no single universally agreed upon definition or guideline for when to use force. However, we know it when we see it. Police brutality was clearly on display when adults, children and our community witnessed George screaming he couldn’t breathe, crying out for his mother, and passing away as a knee was placed on his neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds. We saw a profound, inconceivable tragedy. As physicians, we take a Hippocratic Oath. Witnessing this brutality without taking action violates our oath. Our collective response

A Welcome Reception is held in the Fall of odd years after new students arrive at the Springfield IL campus to begin the Pharmacology & Neuroscience Graduate Program. This event allows the new students to meet and mingle with other graduate students and department faculty in a casual atmosphere. Each March Pharmacology & Neuroscience graduate students organize Brain Awareness Day at Franklin Middle School in Springfield. During Brain Awareness Day, students and research staff deliver a neuroscience presentation to educate 7th and 8th grade students on basic brain anatomy and physiology. The

50 years of education, health care & service

In May, Southern Illinois University School of Medicine held a historic commencement recognition for the medical student graduates of the Class of 2020. The ceremony was full of milestones. It was the school’s first virtual graduation due to COVID-19 safety protocols, coming in the school’s 50 th anniversary year, in which SIU bestowed its 3,000th medical degree upon a new physician. The global pandemic reminds us of the essential need for knowledgeable, well-trained physicians, who learn for a lifetime and readily adapt to change. 2020 Wound Care Symposium | More Than Skin Deep

The 2020 Wound Care Symposium was held March 12, at the IEA building in Springfield, IL. Healthcare workers in Central Illinois were invited to attend and could earn CME credit for attending the symposium. Residency curriculum

Our curriculum Our curriculum is created to optimize clinical experiences to build a family physician’s skill set across 3 years. Our residents work with our own faculty and with a diverse and well-respected group of physician preceptors in our community We have, as of July 2025, started a “ modified Clinic First model ” for resident education. This is our innovative approach to improve resident continuity with their patients, improve resident confidence, efficiency, and comfort in the continuity clinic setting, and to maximize educational experiences on rotations with minimal interruptions
