A model for medical education

If SIU School of Medicine is known for one thing, it is innovation in medical education. At the time SIU School of Medicine was created, medical instruction was fundamentally lecture-based. Led by the Dean, Dr. Richard Moy, the SIU faculty chose a different tack, one that emphasized solving real-world health problems rather than memorizing facts. The model that evolved provided medical students with early exposure to patient care, and it demanded they master a subject before progressing to the next level of training. Dr. Sameer Vohra Recognized as Leader in Public Health by the de Beaumont Foundation

Springfield, IL – Dr. Sameer Vohra, Founding Chair of SIU School of Medicine Department of Population Science and Policy, was recently recognized by the de Beaumont Foundation as one of the inaugural 40 Under 40 in Public Health. About Rheumatology Residency

Southern Illinois University School of Medicine Division of Rheumatology is within the Department of Internal Medicine. Internal Medicine residents in rheumatology work in the clinic under the supervision of faculty. They provide care for patients in rheumatology during their trainings in our division. It is our mission to provide excellent clinical care, and best treatment approaches for rheumatologic diseases.

29th Annual Trainee Research Symposium

On April 26, 2019 graduate and medical students from SIU-SOM traveled to SIU Carbondale to participate in the 29th Annual Trainee Research Symposium. Asmita Dhukhwa (Pharmacology), a graduate student in Dr. Vickram Ramkumar’s laboratory, received 1st Place for her oral presentation “Inhibition of Regulator of G-Protein Signaling 17 Alleviates Cisplatin Otoxicity by Enhancing Otoprotective G-Protein Coupled Receptor” in the Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Fellow Division. Harvard Park Day @ SIU

On April 25 and 26, 3rd and 5th graders from Harvard Park Elementary School visited SIU and spent a wonderful “Harvard Park Day @ SIU”. They learned about oral health, brain functions, bone connection, and finger splint in 4 breakout sessions. At the Pharmacology Department, students gained introductory knowledge about the function of each parts of the brain, and the development of the teen brain through a PowerPoint presentation. Mellinger Receives St. John's Recognition

SIU would like to congratulate department of Surgery's Dr. John Mellinger on being selected as a HSHS St. John's Hospital Physican of the Year . This award honors a physician who consistently reflects the hospital's core values - respect, care, competence and joy. Nominations came from members of the medical staff. Dr. Mellinger was given his award on April 1 at a physician appreciation event at Illini Country Club.
