Medical school celebrates 50th anniversary of inaugural class
Southern Illinois University School of Medicine will celebrate a historic milestone honoring the Class of 1975—its first graduating class—at their 50-year reunion. This marks a significant moment in the school’s history, recognizing the foundation the class established for generations of medical professionals who followed.
The reunion will take place June 21 in Springfield. A dinner will honor the Class of 1975 as inaugural members of the Legion of Legacies on the 50-year anniversary of their graduation.
“The Class of 1975 were pioneers,” said Jerry Kruse, MD, MSPH, dean and provost of SIU School of Medicine. “They took a chance on a new medical school with a bold mission to improve health for the people of central and southern Illinois. Their influence is deeply woven into the fabric of our institution, and we are incredibly proud to celebrate their legacy.”
Each class member in attendance will receive a medallion engraved with the Legion of Legacies insignia and their name. The induction symbolizes the school’s enduring respect and appreciation for the class's contributions to advancing health care, medical education and community well-being across the region and beyond.
The Legion of Legacies will become an annual tradition, honoring each class that reaches the 50-year mark and reinforcing the strong lineage of alumni who have shaped SIU School of Medicine’s mission through their leadership and service.
Established in 1970, SIU’s medical school is based dually in Carbondale and Springfield and is specifically oriented to educating new physicians prepared to practice in Illinois communities. Since 1975, 3,386 physicians have earned SIU medical degrees.
