Student Work Hours During Year Three Coursework This policy shall apply to all Core Clerkships and PEP Selectives taken during Year Three. During a Core Clerkship or PEP Selective, students will not spend on average more than 80 hours per week in required clinical and educational activities. Required activities include, but are not limited to, formal didactic teaching, hospital rounds and activities, out-patient clinic attendance, in-house and at-home calls, and attendance at examinations. SIU Medicine scientist to explore aging’s effect on balance

Balance problems that often accompany aging can lead to falls and injury. Research has also shown a strong link between balance disorders such as unsteady gait or vertigo and Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. An SIU Medicine research scientist has been awarded a $3.2 million grant from the National Institute on Aging to study how cumulative damage to specific hair cells in the inner ear can lead to these troubling balance problems.
