Area high school students get preview of medical school training

Nov. 5, 2019 — SPRINGFIELD, IL - The Association of American Medical Colleges expects a potential shortage of 40,000–100,000 physicians by the year 2030. A proactive preparatory program in Springfield aims to combat that trend by boosting interest in medicine for high school students. Fourteen ninth-graders have been selected for the program, designed to encourage local high school students interested in becoming physicians. Area High School Students to Receive Cardiac Training

A select group of area high school students will learn about matters of the heart during a summer session of the Physician Pipeline Preparatory Program (or P 4 ) on July 16-19 at SIU School of Medicine. Surgeons and health care professionals at the Prairie Heart Institute of Illinois will lead the training instruction. Eight Springfield students are participating in the summer class, part of the four-year program for local high school youth interested in becoming physicians. Area residents can get skin cancer screenings on May 25 at SCI

Central Illinois residents are invited to a free skin cancer screening from 5 - 7 p.m., Thursday, May 25, at Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU Medicine, 325 W. Carpenter St., Springfield. Dermatologists will be on-site to perform free consultations to screen for the most common types of skin cancer.

Art Express receives donation to help those with dementia

Helping those with dementia express themselves through artistic creativity will flourish thanks to a recent donation. Art Express received a $3,000 donation from the 2023 Fat Ass 5K & Street Party for Charity , an event that raises funds for charitable causes in the Springfield area. Art Express is one of the Beyond the Medical Center programs hosted by the Dale and Deborah Smith Center for Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment, helping those with Alzheimer’s and related dementia through art expression. As football season kicks off, CTE worries persist

A study published in the July issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association again showed troubling evidence of the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) among NFL players. The data indicated that CTE was found in 117 of 119 brains of those who played professional football. (Like Alzheimer’s disease, CTE is diagnosed posthumously.)
