The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant disruptions to medical education across the country. We understand that students' anxiety about the upcoming application cycle has been heightened given the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 related changes to curriculum and scheduling and how this will affect the residency application process. As dermatology residency program directors, we would like to address principal areas of the residency application process to hopefully lessen students' concerns regarding the upcoming cycle and offer updated recommendations to dermatology programs and students

On September 16, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker announced new appointments to state boards and commissions. Don Diemer, PA, DHSc, was appointed to serve as a member of the Illinois State Medical Board. Diemer is the program director for the Physician Assistant Program and Doctor of Medical Science Program at SIU School of Medicine. He also serves as a physician assistant for Rural Health Inc. Previously, Diemer served as the associate program director for the Physician Assistant Program at Texas Tech University. Diemer served in the United States Air Force for more than 20 years as a captain

A trio of SIU School of Medicine alumni are being honored for their distinguished service and career accomplishments. They will be recognized at the 2024 Commencement Ceremony in May.

School physicals and select immunizations are required for students entering pre-k, kindergarten, 6th and 9th grades and for students new to Illinois. Students entering 12th grade need proof of the meningococcal vaccine on or after their 16th birthday.

The Division of Orthopedic Surgery has been awarded the 2020-2021 Robert Bucholz Journal Club Grant from the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery (JBJS) Resident Education Fund. The application was completed and submitted by Dr. Paul Al-Attar (Orthopedic Surgery, PGY-4) on behalf of the SIU Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program. This grant is used to support orthopaedic training by teaching residents how to evaluate current scientific literature and providing educational information on managing an effective journal club.
