High School Students Get Preview of Medical School Training

Preparatory program begins eighth year Research indicates a potential physician shortage could occur in the U.S. within the next decade. A proactive preparatory program in Springfield aims to combat that trend by boosting interest in medicine during the high school years. Hillsboro Area Hospital to Host Free Cancer Screenings on March 9

Doctors from Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU will provide free cancer screenings from 9 a.m. – noon on Saturday, March 9, at Hillsboro Area Hospital, 1200 East Tremont. “Early detection of cancer is so important in treating the disease,” said Aziz Khan, MD, executive director of Simmons Cancer Institute and chief of hematology/oncology at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield. “We are very glad to partner with Hillsboro Area Hospital to offer a second year of free screenings for area residents.” The Montgomery County Cancer Association is sponsoring the free event. Susan Thompson Hingle, MD, has been selected as the associate dean for the Center for Human and Organizational Potential (cHOP) at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Dr. Hingle will direct and guide the development the new center’s programs, with focus on wellness, leadership and excellence, and professional development. Hingle Named Chair of National Doctor's Group

San Diego – Susan Thompson Hingle, MD, FACP, has been named Chair of ACP’s Board of Regents of the American College of Physicians (ACP), the national organization of Internal Medicine specialists. Her term began during Internal Medicine Meeting 2017, ACP’s annual scientific meeting held in San Diego from March 30-April 1. A resident of Springfield, Ill., Dr. Hingle is Professor of Medicine and an Internal Medicine specialist at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Home Sweet Home: IDoA Issues Grant to Help Keep Alzheimer's Patients in Homes Longer

People living with Alzheimer’s disease may be able to stay in their homes longer, thanks to a three-year, $701,994 grant to Southern Illinois University Medicine’s Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders (CADRD). “Giving patients and caregivers the support and resources they need means patients are less likely to end up in costly assisted living or elder care facilities,” said Tom Ala, MD, interim director of the CADRD in Springfield.
