Racism's Threat to Public Health - a Message from the Dean

On April 6, 2020, my message to SIU Medicine employees focused on racial inequities in the delivery of health care, racial disparities in health care outcomes, and the overt and implicit systemic racism that lies at the root of these inequities and disparities for African Americans. Deep Brain Stimulation brings new life to patients with movement disorders Written by Rebecca Budde | Photographs by James Hawker Published in Aspects, Winter 2012 | Vol 35-1 Diagnosed with essential tremor at age 10, Don Klinker of Decatur has always had a hard time with daily tasks that most people do without thinking. “I love to play golf,” says the 73-year-old father of four and grandfather of five. “But by the time I could take my hand off the ball, I’d knock it off the tee.” So his friends would tee up for him. And drinking coffee or signing checks? Forget it. He gave up coffee and had a

Learn about breast cancer risk factors. As clinicians and researchers, we learn more every day about breast cancer risk factors. By becoming aware of your own risk factors, you can start

Raising alcohol awareness among farmers

It's important to talk honestly and openly about alcohol use. Recent research published in the scientific journal Hepatology found that excess drinking increased by more than 20% among U.S. adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some farmers may use alcohol as a way to cope with high levels of stress. Others may have a family or personal history of alcoholism or mental health conditions like anxiety and depression. Some studies also suggest that
