SIU Med School Physician Pipeline Program Now Accepting Applications

Springfield area high school freshmen interested in becoming doctors are invited to take their career explorations one step further. Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, Springfield Public Schools (SPS) and the Sangamon County Medical Society are now accepting applications for the Physician Preparatory Pipeline Program (P4). P4 students begin the program during their freshman year and continue in the program throughout high school. Springfield area high school freshmen interested becoming doctors are invited to take their career explorations one step further. Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and Springfield Public Schools (SPS) will host a Physician Preparatory Pipeline Program (P4) informational meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 16 for students and parents. The meeting will begin at 5 p.m. in the South Auditorium of the medical school's main instructional facility, 801 N. Rutledge St., in Springfield. P4 is a partnership between the medical school and SPS that is designed for freshman high school students

SIU Med School Program Offers Teens Opportunity to Explore Medical Careers

High school students interested in careers in medicine are invited to join Medical Explorers Post 998, sponsored by Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and Abraham Lincoln Council of the Boy Scouts of America. An informational kick-off meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, in the West Auditorium of 801 N. Rutledge St. in Springfield. SIU Med School Students Earn Scholarships

Twenty-five students at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine have been awarded scholarships over the past few weeks. Three fourth-year students received the Alumni Scholarship: Kyle McCullough , son of Michael and Gayle McCullough of Decatur; Jacquelyne Mool , daughter of Ken Mool of Panola and Kim Scott of Peoria; and Jasmine Moreno , daughter of Efren and Martha Moreno of Chicago. “The Spectrum of Cancer Care for Primary Providers,” is the topic of the 14th Annual Simmons Cancer Institute Symposium, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, September 3 at Memorial Center for Learning and Innovation, 228 W. Coordination to improve quality, lower costs Patients with complex brain and spine disorders may benefit from a new, multispecialty clinic at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield. NIH grant to fund researcher development, increase cancer research scope Research suggests that where you live in Illinois impacts your likelihood of dying from certain diseases, specifically cancer. Low-income, rural communities experience significant cancer health disparities, including lower screening rates, increased incidence, later stage at detection, poorer survival rates and higher mortality. SIU Med School Welcomes Class of 2020

Seventy-seven medical students began their medical training last week at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Carbondale. The students participated in a "White Coat Ceremony" on Friday, August 12, in Shryock Auditorium. Michael Hyun-ook Kim, MD, MMM, FACC, FHRS, has joined the faculty of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine as the chief of the Division of Cardiology and a professor of medicine. He is also a member of SIU HealthCare, the School's group practice.
