Dealing with Sexual Harassment in the Clinic

A patient says something flirtatious to a physician during a clinical encounter that makes the doctor uncomfortable. It may be inappropriate, but is it sexual harassment? SIU faculty and staff debated this scenario and others that dealt with the hot-button topic during a panel on Jan. 30 in the South Auditorium. Decatur Residents participate in DPS Extended Day Program - 2022

The Family Medicine Residency Decatur residents participated in the Decatur Public School Extended day Program with students from Decatur School District schools. The DPS program is a before and after-school program created to bridge the childcare gap for DPS families and support the District’s focus on providing intentional academic opportunities beyond the school day. DPS collaborated with DEA, Decatur Education Association and DFTA, Decatur Federation of Teaching Assistants to develop a program that supports district students and provides a childcare option for working families. Decatur School Students to Benefit from 'Healthy Communities' Grant

Southern Illinois University School of Medicine has received a $42,000 grant for a planning project to improve the health and wellness of students in Decatur public schools. Decatur Public School District #61 is funding the grant, received from the Illinois State Board of Education through a partnership with the Illinois Education Association. “Education and health go hand-in-hand,” said Sameer Vohra, MD, JD, who is leading the team project. “Studies show that healthier children will get better grades and have reduced absences.” Vohra, a pediatrician, is executive director of SIU School of

SIU Medicine’s December 2019 patient experience highlight recognizes Sandra Ettema, MD, Department of Otolaryngology. Informing patients and their families of a terminal illness is not something that most of us would think about daily. For our providers, that is a different story. Dementia and Driving

According to the National Institute on Aging, there are more than 41 million licensed drivers age 65 and older on the roads, up from 26 million just 20 years ago. As a person ages, changes in health, including problems with vision, hearing, and reflexes, may affect driving skills. The risk of being injured or killed in a motor vehicle crash also increases as a person ages. When a person has dementia, the risk increases more. ‘Denim & Diamonds’ Cancer Institute Fundraiser Celebrates 15th Anniversary

Simmons Cancer Institute at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine is hosting its 15th annual “Denim & Diamonds” fundraiser Saturday, October 3. The funds raised will support innovative research projects and enhance patient comforts. More than 90 percent of the funds raised at the event stay local. Guests at Denim & Diamonds are encouraged to dress in their finest denim or formal attire for the event, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 3000 S. Dirksen Parkway, Springfield. This year’s theme is “It’s a Wonderful Night for a Moondance.” Tickets are $125 per person

Denim & Diamonds Fundraiser Set for Oct. 15

Simmons Cancer Institute (SCI) at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine will host its annual “Denim & Diamonds” fundraiser Saturday, October 15. The event features one-of-a-kind live and silent auction items, raffles, live entertainment and dinner. More than 600 guests attended last year’s fundraiser. “It’s a spectacular event that features something for everyone,” said Tara Matheson, 2016 Denim & Diamonds chair. “What is incredibly meaningful about Denim & Diamonds is the funds that it raises for cancer research on the SIU School of Medicine campus and the patient programs at SCI.”
