Impact of today's Community Health Worker

Not many know what a Community Health Worker (CHW) is or what the profession entails. The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) describes a CHW as “lay members of the community who work either for pay or as volunteers in association with the local health care system in urban and rural environments." CHWs usually share ethnicity, language, socioeconomic status, and life experiences with the community members they serve. Tyra Jones, Education Coordinator for the Office of Community Care at SIU Medicine says CHWS have been identified by many titles, such as community health advisors

In Memoriam: Wes McNeese, MD

Dr. Wesley Robinson-McNeese, a trailblazing physician and leader at SIU School of Medicine, passed away on September 18, 2023. Dr. McNeese was the SIU System Executive Director for Diversity Initiatives and Special Advisor to the SIU Department of Antiracism, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Injury Prevention Messages Resume Under ThinkFirst

Teenagers, children and other community members will once again hear messages of safe driving and injury prevention through ThinkFirst , a national injury prevention program. The local chapter of ThinkFirst has resumed work under the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield. The program, funded by grants from the Illinois Department of Transportation, was suspended in February due to the lack of state funds. The Illinois Department of Transportation has awarded a new grant for FY 17 totaling $304,649. The program is part of
