Southern Illinois teams to participate in child abuse simulation training

The challenges of preventing and responding to cases of child abuse can be difficult, even to professionals familiar in their roles within social welfare agencies. To aid in improving care, child protection teams from two Children’s Advocacy Centers (CAC) in Franklin and Williamson counties and the seven southernmost counties in Illinois (Two Rivers CAC) will receive simulation training on February 21-22 in Carbondale.

Springfield & Sherman Fire Departments Host SIUEM Fire Day

The 2nd Annual SIUEM Fire Day was held at the Sherman Fire Department April 6th 2017. Firefighters from the Springfield Fire Department Training Division instructed the residents and students on forced entry, confined space movements and the manipulation of equipment through a multistory training tower. Resident physicians presented topics on suspension syndrome, blast and crush injuries. The event allows our learners to better understand the environment and extremes that our patients and prehospital providers face when a structure fire occurs.

Springfield Family Medicine Residency program welcomes 2023 chief residents

The SIU Family Medicine Residency Program in Springfield announced Karie Schwertman and Ashay Vaidya as their chief residents for the 2023-2024 academic year. Chief residents are selected by their co-residents and considered leaders of the group. The term they will serve is one year during their final year as residents. They are considered the point of contact for insight into the program and education and the liaison between the residents and the program director. Springfield physician to share Mars mission insights

Think you have what it takes to live on Mars? Springfield emergency medicine physician Dr. Nathan Jones thought he did. And now he knows for certain. Late one night in 2023, Jones clicked a link on his computer and "went down a rabbit hole" that led to a year-long simulation experiment with NASA. The SIU School of Medicine alumnus was selected to serve as the mission medical officer, living in a tightly monitored 1,700-square-foot module dubbed Mars Dune Alpha at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Springfield teens complete SIU physician prep program

Fourteen Springfield-area high school students are better prepared to become physicians after graduating from the Physician Pipeline Preparatory Program (P 4 ), a four-year program sponsored by Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, Springfield Public Schools and the Sangamon County Medical Society. The P 4 graduation was held in the South Auditorium at SIU’s main instructional building, 801 N. Rutledge St. on February 13.
