Family & Community Medicine - Carbondale Earns National Recognition

April 5, 2018 – The Southern Illinois University Family and Community Medicine program in Carbondale has achieved recognition as a Level 3 Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), a private, non-profit organization dedicated to improving health care quality. Family Medicine Laboratory in Quincy Receives Accreditation and Excellence Award

The SIU Center for Family Medicine – Quincy has met all criteria for Laboratory Accreditation by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation Review (COLA), a national health care accreditation organization. The lab received no deficiencies and received the Laboratory Excellence Award, which represents the lab’s “commitment to performing quality patient testing and overall laboratory practices.” The lab “demonstrated successful proficiency testing for the prior three testing events and had no substantiated complaints against the laboratory,” according to the congratulatory letter from COLA. Farm Family Resource Initiative offers new helpline

SPRINGFIELD – Area farmers who need someone to talk to about the everyday stresses of farming and pandemic-related challenges now have a new resource. A new helpline ( 1-833-FARM-SOS ) will connect farmers to health professionals and services through the Farm Family Resource Initiative. In addition to the helpline, the initiative offers ongoing outreach, education and training to rural partners working to improve the health and safety of farm families. Farming is a challenging and sometimes dangerous business. Weather, machinery, logistics and livestock can cause difficulties within a day’s work. Yet these can pale next to the concerns and stress that a farmer carries inside. Farmers are among the most likely to die by suicide, compared with other occupations, according to a 2022 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
