Farming and back pain - avoid the aches and pains

Old MacDonald had a farm and probably an aching back, too. Research shows that farmers experience more back pain than the general population due to the physical demands of the job. Because back pain can reduce productivity and increase medical costs, preventing back injuries is imperative for farmers.

FDA requires patient notification of breast density

Nearly half of women age 40 and older have dense breasts, which can make mammograms harder to read and increase the likelihood of missing cancer during screenings. To address this, the FDA now requires mammogram facilities to notify patients about their breast density.

Finding the starting line for Alzheimer's

Where should research start in solving Alzheimer's? That's a tricky question to answer. What exactly are researchers looking for when trying to solve the Alzheimer’s puzzle? “It depends on the researcher,” says Kevin Hascup, PhD. “Really, the tried and true biomarkers are three — amyloid, tau and neurofilament light chain, or what is known as A/T/N.” A biomarker (molecules in blood, body fluid, and tissue) helps with understanding the changes that occur with age and disease onset. First Class: SIU School of Medicine launches Lincoln Scholars Program

Medical students will be based, trained in rural regions Southern Illinois University School of Medicine has a 50-year tradition of educating physicians to improve health care in central and southern Illinois.
