Groundbreaking: SIU, HSHS plan new outpatient clinic for women, children

HSHS St. John’s Hospital broke ground June 27 on a new outpatient center. The 85,000-square-foot outpatient center set to open in 2018 will house providers from SIU Medicine and HSHS Medical Group and provide comprehensive services for women and children.“Providing access, convenience and the best possible care for our patients has been at the forefront of our minds in this planning process,” said Charles L. Growing Illinois’ behavioral health workforce

SIU leads efforts to cultivate connections, nurture opportunities for behavioral health access In 2017, Dr. Kari Wolf launched her campaign to begin growing Illinois’ behavioral health workforce. She met with state legislators to discuss a bill that would convene a task force to evaluate the impact of the depleted workforce. Hand surgery research grant awarded to plastic surgery, orthopedic divisions

The Division of Orthopedic Surgery and Institute for Plastic Surgery have been awarded the J. Leonard Goldner Pioneer Research Award for their grant proposal: “LGR+ Stem Cells Augment Osteogenesis on Bone Defect Scaffolds.” The grant was a collaborative effort by Austin Beason, MD (Orthopedic Surgery, PGY-3), Carrie Harrison and Michelle Randle (both from the Plastic Surgery Research Laboratory), and Jacob Franke (third-year medical student). Harvard Park Day @ SIU

On April 25 and 26, 3rd and 5th graders from Harvard Park Elementary School visited SIU and spent a wonderful “Harvard Park Day @ SIU”. They learned about oral health, brain functions, bone connection, and finger splint in 4 breakout sessions. At the Pharmacology Department, students gained introductory knowledge about the function of each parts of the brain, and the development of the teen brain through a PowerPoint presentation. Hascup Lab, SIUC collaboration to explore new path for Alzheimer’s therapy

A collaboration between neuroscience and engineering will explore a novel approach in reducing formation of plaques commonly found in those with Alzheimer’s. Kevin Hascup, PhD, of the Smith Alzheimer’s Center at SIU Medicine, and Chilman Bae, PhD, of Southern Illinois University Carbondale were awarded an SIU System Collaborative Grant to investigate how a cellular pathway called Piezo channels could be key in helping unlock better treatments for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Hascup named director of Alzheimer's center

Erin Hascup, PhD , has been named as the new director of the SIU Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders (CADRD) beginning January 1, 2020. Tom Ala, MD, was serving as the interim director and will become CADRD's medical director. Dr. Hascup has been with SIU School of Medicine since 2012, initially as a research associate within CADRD. She joined the faculty of the SIU SOM Department of Neurology in 2013 as Assistant Professor (Research) and was promoted to Associate Professor in the Tenure Track in 2018.
