Med School Celebrates Arts Magazine's 25th Anniversary

Since its founding in 1970, SIU School of Medicine has included instruction in the medical humanities to balance the focus placed on the applied sciences. In 1992 a pair of students -- Manish Kohli and James Davis -- initiated the creation of Scope, an annual literary arts magazine to serve as a creative outlet for SIU’s medical community. Poems, short stories, artwork and photography are submitted by SIU students, physicians, alumni, staff and family members each winter. Selections are made by editorial staff and monetary prizes given to the top entries in three categories: art, poetry and

Scholarships are a critical component to help them manage their debt.” Five fourth-year students at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine were awarded the Alumni Scholarship established by the charter Class of 1976 as a gift in honor of its 25th reunion. Medical school honors Sangamon County student artists

“My kid could paint that.” This statement is meant as criticism when uttered by an art museum patron or gallery browser who sees similarities between an exuberant offspring and an abstract master like Pablo Picasso or Jackson Pollock. However, “My kid painted that” takes on an air of pride when a parent says it at the Sangamon County Art Exhibit, currently on display in the Medical Library at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield. A closing reception and awards ceremony for more than 70 young artists will be held 4:30 – 5:30 p.m., Friday, May 10, at the medical school
