All conferences except for the Neurosurgery Journal Club, are held either at the SIU Medical School, Memorial Medical Center or St. John’s Hospital – all of which are within 0.7 miles of each other.  The Neurosurgery Journal Club is held at a faculty member’s home on a rotating schedule.

The Neurosurgery conference is a weekly didactic conference for neurosurgery residents and faculty where the neurosurgery curriculum as defined by the Congress of Neurological Surgeons is taught by the faculty members on a weekly basis.  In this conference, topics are presented by the faculty member or a resident with faculty supervision.  These topics are ones that are specific to neurosurgery and not covered by the SIU Core Neurosciences curriculum.

The Neuroscience Core Curriculum Conference is a weekly didactic conference for neurosurgery residents and in conjunction with the SIU Neurology residents.  This curriculum follows topics in Neuroscience, Fourth Edition, Ed. Purves et al. and also covers topics defined by the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.  Teaching responsibilities are shared by the Neurology and Neurosurgical faculty (see Appendix D for a sample agenda from the past two years). This conference is currently held every Friday morning.

The Neurosurgery Journal Club is held at a faculty member’s home every month on a rotating schedule.  Resident’s are assigned to review a number of key articles from the major neurosurgical journals  and these articles are discussed by the faculty and residents.

The Neuropathology Conference is a monthly brain cutting conference followed by a microscopic review of neuropathology slides for neurosurgery residents, neurology residents and faculty.  This conference is conducted by the SIU Neuropathologist, Dr. Brian Moore.  It currently is held every second Friday of the month at the Memorial Medical Center Morgue.

The Neuro-Oncology Tumor Board meeting is held every two weeks.  Selected neuro-oncology cases are reviewed and there is a discussion of management issues associated with these cases.  Each case is discussed by the attending or resident bringing the case to the board, with discussions from neurosurgeons, neurologists, radiation oncologists, social work, neuroradiologists, neuropathologists, and general oncologists.

The Neurosurgery M&M conference is a monthly conference for neurosurgery residents and faculty.  All cases of morbidity and mortality occurring on the SIU Neurosurgery service are discussed.  Cases are usually selected by the residents but can be identified by faculty or other individuals.  All cases are discussed in detail.

The weekly Neurology/Neurosurgery Grand Rounds is a conference where selected topics related to clinical Neuroscience are discussed in varying formats.  This conference is jointly supervised by the Program Directors of Neurology and Neurosurgery (see Appendix E for a sample agenda).

The Neuroradiology conference is run by the Department of Radiology and is for the residents in radiology, neurology and neurosurgery.  This conference is intended to highlight interesting and instructive cases in neuroradiology interpretation.  This conference is currently held every Monday morning at 7:30 am at St. John’s Hospital Radiology conference room.

The Stroke/Neurovascular Conference is a monthly conference and is focused on interesting stroke and neurovascular cases.  This conference includes interventional neuroendovascular cases.  It is run by the leader of the neuroendovascular team, Dr. Kale.

The Spine Conference is a monthly meeting that is held jointly with the Division of Orthopaedics.  The Conference is organized by the Spine Fellow.

The SIU GME/QI conference is a series of conferences for all residents at SIU dealing with issues related to Quality Improvement, patient safety, medical errors, etc.  This is held monthly and is run by the SIU GME Committee.
