For more than 50 years SIU Medicine has emphasized teaching for the providers of the future and achieved national recognition as a leader and innovator in Graduate Medical Education.

Welcome

SIU School of Medicine's mission is to optimize the health of the people of central and southern Illinois through education, patient care, research and service to the community. SIU Graduate Medical Education (GME) supports this mission via program excellence, individual attention and support for learners, supervisors and staff, and strong relationships with our affiliate hospitals. 

Our GME programs offer learners direct access to sophisticated technologies, advanced training and evidence-based innovations.  Our institutional aim is to train physicians in a variety of specialties who are well-equipped to practice in small urban and rural communities. 

Graduates of SIU residency and fellowship programs will be confident, caring and passionate physicians who will succeed and carry our values, and our commitment to social accountability, wherever they choose to practice.

Featured program

SIU School of Medicine is a world-renowned leader in medical education.  Our Pediatric residency program provides unique individualized training to our residents as they pursue careers in primary care and subspecialty training. As a Pediatric referral center for Central and Southern Illinois, residents receive ample clinical exposure in our busy clinics and children’s hospital, including in our newly remodeled Level III Neonatal ICU. Our close faculty mentorship and advising programs foster a supportive environment for our residents to grow as future leaders and advocates for children.

SIU School of Medicine will host the first use of the newest edition of the Advanced Trauma Life Support course in the United States on April 29–30. The Southern Illinois Trauma Center (SITC) at Springfield Memorial Hospital and the Memorial Learning Center are piloting the training.
