Our vision is to develop an internationally renowned unit of excellence for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of musculoskeletal diseases that will improve the quality of life for the patients we treat at SIU. We have integrated clinical services, education, and research related to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of bone and joint related diseases to shape the face of musculoskeletal health care delivery.
The conduct of research is critically important to the mission of SIU School of Medicine and SIU Orthopedic Surgery. Research activities within the Division support the delivery of high quality care and provide patients with alternative innovative treatment options. Our faculty have led many research projects and authored a multitude of publications in peer-reviewed journals on a variety of topics ranging from health policy to multi-center clinical trials, ensuring the highest quality care for our patients as well as providing numerous educational opportunities for students and residents. Additionally, members of SIU Orthopaedics Surgery have led symposiums and instructional courses on cutting edge research at the annual meetings of the American Orthopaedic Association and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
The Division has invested significantly in the research infrastructure for Orthopaedics. Clinical trial support staff within the Division is available and actively coordinate as well as oversee sponsored and investigator-initiated study protocols of the Division. Furthermore, the efforts of the support staff also facilitate industry sponsored drug and device trials.
The SIU Orthopedic Surgery participates in the overall educational mission of the SIU School of Medicine by contributing orthopaedic and rehabilitation medicine expertise to undergraduate, graduate, medical students, and continuing education programs. Through a rigorous residency program which draws students of the highest caliber, we inspire and train the experts of tomorrow. An evolving research program further enhances our dedication to education and patient care. Thus, our research accomplishments provide increased opportunities for academic success and improved health care. In addition to providing an environment supportive of teamwork, communication, and collaboration with other individuals and organizations, we also foster and provide numerous opportunities and encouragement for faculty, staff, residents, and students to advance their careers in the field of orthopaedics and rehabilitation medicine, contributing to the education and training of orthopaedic medical professionals of today as well as of the future.
