Evaluation of Faculty

The quality of the faculty’s teaching and clinical care is integral to the quality of the program and the quality of the residents’ future clinical care. All faculty members who interact with residents must be provided feedback on their contribution to the mission of the program. Therefore, the program has the responsibility to evaluate and improve faculty members’ teaching, scholarship, professionalism, and quality care. That responsibility lies with the program director.

As taken from the ACGME Common Program Requirements (July 1, 2023 version):

The program director is responsible for the education program and for whom delivers it. To that end, the program director must:

  • develop and oversee a process to evaluate candidates prior to approval as faculty members for participation in the residency program education and at least annually thereafter;
  • have the authority to approve program faculty members for participation in the residency program education at all sites;
  • have the authority to remove program faculty members from participation in the residency program education at all sites; and
  • have the authority to remove residents from supervising interactions and/or learning environments that do not meet the standards of the program

The program director may need to work with others to determine the effectiveness of a faculty member’s performance with regard to their role in the educational program. All teaching faculty must have their educational efforts evaluated by the residents in a confidential and anonymous manner. Other aspects for the feedback may include research or clinical productivity, curriculum development, review of patient outcomes, or quality and patient safety efforts. The feedback from the various sources must be summarized and provided to the faculty each year. The program director should work with the Department or Division Chair to determine the best person to provide this feedback.  GMEC has formulated a list of best practices in providing feedback to faculty regarding their role as educators

The program must have a formal process to annually evaluate each faculty member’s performance as it relates to the educational program.

  • This evaluation must include a review of the faculty member’s clinical teaching abilities, engagement with the educational program, participation in faculty development related to their skills as an educator, clinical performance, professionalism, and scholarly activities.
  • This evaluation must include written, anonymous, and confidential *evaluations by the residents.
  • Faculty members must receive feedback on their evaluations at least annually.
  • Aggregate results of faculty educational evaluations should be incorporated into program-wide faculty development plans and the Annual Program Evaluation data review.

*It is not uncommon for residents to have concerns about the confidentiality of such evaluations. To maximize their comfort level in providing useful assessment, it is helpful to provide education about the confidentiality parameters of New Innovations. GMEC has developed an instrument for the assessment of faculty skills in clinical teaching and establishment of a good learning climate. OGME staff will administer this upon request.
