SIU Medicine Grants Medical Degrees at 45th Commencement

Sixty-five physicians and three graduate students at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine received their diplomas Saturday, May 18, in the Sangamon Auditorium at University of Illinois Springfield during the school’s 45 th commencement. This year’s commencement speaker was Senait Fisseha, MD, JD, director of International Programs at the Susan T. Buffet Foundation, responsible for distributing more than $300 million in annual grants to support reproductive health around the world. Originally from Ethiopia, Fisseha earned her legal degree at SIU in 1996 and her medical degree in 1999

cHOP Participation

One of our strategies for developing a mindset around leadership and excellence across the organization is to begin a movement of book clubs across SIU SOM. The clubs will involve small group meetings with colleagues for an hour, once a month, over the course of a year. Books will be provided, and each month approximately one chapter will be discussed. The first book club book will be The Truth About Leadership by James Kouzes and Barry Posner.

Congratulations to Dr. Sandra Ettema, SIU's Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgeon, for the distinguished honor of being inducted into the Triological Society on May 3, 2019 at the Combined Otolaryngology Spring Meeting in Austin, Texas.
