The SIU General Surgery Residency has been very successful in preparing graduates for competitive fellowship and job opportunities. Over the last 10 years, graduates have matriculated in fellowships in colorectal surgery, trauma and surgical critical care, minimally invasive surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, surgical endoscopy, breast oncology, and transplant surgery. Similar to national averages, approximately 20% have gone directly into practice in general surgery upon completion of the residency. General Surgery Residency Application Process

The SIU General Surgery Residency Program participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). All applications must be submitted through ERAS. Below are answers to the most frequently asked questions regarding applications to our program. How many residents do you match each year? We are currently approved for four categorical spots per year. We do not offer preliminary positions or observerships. What are the requirements to apply to your program? We require a USMLE Step 1 score of 220 or higher, three letters of recommendation other than the MSPE (formally the Dean’s letter)

The general surgery program at SIU comprises the most expertly trained and diverse group of general surgery providers in our region. All members of the division are fellowship trained in at least one advanced surgical discipline, including trauma and critical care, surgical oncology, bariatric surgery, colorectal surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and advanced surgical endoscopy.
