Sangamon County Student Art Exhibit & Reception

Since 1987, SIU Medicine has hosted this showcase for the county's finest student artists. Art teachers for grades K-12 can submit up to four artworks from their respective schools. Judges then narrow the selections further for the exhibit. The artworks are on display in the school's medical library on the 4th floor of 801 N. Rutledge St. in Springfield, Monday through Friday during regular business hours. On Friday, May 9, there will be an artists' reception in the library, followed by an award ceremony in the South and West Auditoriums.

“My kid could paint that.” This cliché is meant as criticism when stated by an art museum patron or gallery browser who sees similarities between an exuberant offspring and master expressionists like Pablo Picasso and Edvard Munch. Sangamon County Student-Artists Honored

Students from 30 schools in Sangamon County were recognized for their creativity at the 30th annual Sangamon County Art Awards, hosted by SIU School of Medicine on May 5. More than 90 works of art created by K - 12 students in pencil, marker, paint, yarn and clay were selected by a jury of art teachers for the annual exhibition in the Dean's Lobby April 17 - May 5. A reception for the artists and their families preceded an awards presentations in the South and West Auditoriums.

Sangita Basnet receives AWIMS Honor

Mother, Mentor & Medical Leader Sangita Basnet, MD, is a physician, a fighter, and a champion for those in need, both here and abroad. As professor and chief of pediatric critical care at SIU School of Medicine and medical director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at St. John’s Children’s Hospital in Springfield, she was recently honored with the inaugural AWIMS Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Advancement of Women in Medicine and Science. Sanner, Gaebel Receive Blue Devil Pride Award for Excellence

Quincy Public School District Superintendent Roy Webb awarded two SIU Center for Family Medicine - Quincy staffers with the Blue Devil Pride Award for Excellence on Friday, October 12. Deb Sanner, who also retired from SIU Medicine on Oct. 12, and Chris Gaebel are part of the school's Hotspotting Program, directed by Tracey Smith, DNP, assistant professor at the SIU Center for Family Medicine in Springfield. Sanner and Gaebel worked with families in the district with high truancy rates helping to alleviate barriers in their life. The goal of the program is to improve school attendance.

SIU School of Medicine has launched a new scholar track for medical students and staff who want to advance diversity and integration, reduce stigma and biases, and practice anti-racism and critical consciousness in health care.

SIU School of Medicine will host its 48th Annual Commencement ceremony at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 21. Students will receive diplomas at the UIS Performing Arts Center in Springfield.

SCI colorectal screening kit distribution

Simmons Cancer Institute will provide free colorectal cancer screening kits to area residents at a drive-through event from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. and 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 28. Guests can enter Simmons Cancer Institute’s circle drive (315 W. Carpenter) and remain in their vehicle while a kit is brought to them. Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths among both men and women in the United States and the second most common cause of cancer deaths when the groups are combined. Colorectal cancer is expected to cause more than 52,000 deaths during 2023

SCI Invites Brain Tumor Patients, Caregivers to New Support Group

A new support group for adult brain tumor patients and their caregivers will begin meeting from 6 - 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month. The Brain Tumor Support Group is sponsored through the neuro-oncology program at Simmons Cancer Institute (SCI) at Southern Illinois University Medicine. The group’s first meeting will be Thursday, February 2, at Memorial Medical Center, 701 N.1st St., Room B149.
