Advanced Hernia Grand Rounds

The SIU Division of General Surgery and the Springfield Memorial Hospital Advanced Hernia Center present Advanced Hernia Grand Rounds with visiting professor, Eric Pauli, MD. Dr. Pauli is the chief of the Division of Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Associate Professor of Surgery and Program Director for the Abdominal Wall Surgery Fellowship at Pennsylvania State University. He developed the “Pauli technique” for parastomal hernia repair, and he will present “Prometheus, Sisyphus and the Challenges of Parastomal Hernia Repair”.

Advances in Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle cell disease is painful, leads to a high incidence of stroke and carries with it a much shorter life expectancy than the average person living in the developed world. Andrew Wilber, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Cell Biology at SIU School of Medicine, and his team are working to change that.

Advocating for Amber

Community health worker Nicol Moore met Amber Hinkle, 41, during a 2021 neighborhood celebration in Comer Cox Park. Amber had chronic leg pain and had become discouraged with her physician. “I’d bring things to my doctor’s attention but they were always getting swept under the rug, or they were misdiagnosed,” Hinkle says. Moore told her about SIU’s Access to Care program and offered to find her a new physician. Within a week, Moore had connected her with Dr. Patrick Long, a resident physician at SIU’s Center for Family Medicine in Springfield. He examined Hinkle and enlisted the help of SIU

AFSCME, SIU School of Medicine ratify new agreement

After nearly 14 months of negotiations, SIU School of Medicine and AFSCME Local 370 have come to an agreement and successfully ratified a new contract, effective through June 30, 2025.
