Grant Expands Children’s Health Care Efforts in Southern Illinois

Delta Region to add mental health component to school programs Communities and families in Illinois’ southernmost counties will have improved access to programs to combat chronic diseases thanks to a new $2.1 million federal grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Grants help Sangamon County improve services for individuals with mental illness, substance use disorders

As a result of reduced state and federal funding, jails and prisons have become de facto mental health facilities at both local and national levels. Staff members at these institutions are sometimes unable to manage this population’s specific needs. With help from SIU School of Medicine staff, Sangamon County Court Services received two grants to develop services provided to persons with mental illness (MI) or co-occurring substance abuse (CMISA) who are arrested and jailed for minor offenses. Grants to help Sangamon County divert people from jail

The Sangamon County Jail’s inmate population has exceeded its 285-beds capacity every year since 2002. For the past 16 years, the jail’s population has averaged 336, due in part to a significant increase in the proportion of court-involved individuals with mental illness (MI) or co-occurring substance abuse (CMISA). Sangamon County’s legal system does its best to handle the growing numbers of the mentally ill population. Groundbreaking!

The new four-story facility will house providers from SIU Medicine and the HSHS Medical Group. Groundbreaking: SIU, HSHS plan new outpatient clinic for women, children

HSHS St. John’s Hospital broke ground June 27 on a new outpatient center. The 85,000-square-foot outpatient center set to open in 2018 will house providers from SIU Medicine and HSHS Medical Group and provide comprehensive services for women and children.“Providing access, convenience and the best possible care for our patients has been at the forefront of our minds in this planning process,” said Charles L. Growing Illinois’ behavioral health workforce

SIU leads efforts to cultivate connections, nurture opportunities for behavioral health access In 2017, Dr. Kari Wolf launched her campaign to begin growing Illinois’ behavioral health workforce. She met with state legislators to discuss a bill that would convene a task force to evaluate the impact of the depleted workforce. Hand surgery research grant awarded to plastic surgery, orthopedic divisions

The Division of Orthopedic Surgery and Institute for Plastic Surgery have been awarded the J. Leonard Goldner Pioneer Research Award for their grant proposal: “LGR+ Stem Cells Augment Osteogenesis on Bone Defect Scaffolds.” The grant was a collaborative effort by Austin Beason, MD (Orthopedic Surgery, PGY-3), Carrie Harrison and Michelle Randle (both from the Plastic Surgery Research Laboratory), and Jacob Franke (third-year medical student).
